The 18th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks return home Sunday to face the Alcorn State Braves in the first of four consecutive home games in the Carolina Center. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
After Friday night’s 57-39 road win at Temple, South Carolina improved its record to 9-1 on the season while Alcorn State is 6-3. The Braves last played on December 20th when they defeated Arkansas Little Rock, 88-74.
Senior Jocelyn Penn continues to lead the Gamecocks in scoring as the Naismith nominee is contributing 26.8 points per contest. South Carolina has two other players who average in double figures as Cristina Ciocan comes in second at 12.2 ppg and Petra Ujhelyi is third at 10.7. Ujhelyi leads USC on the boards with a 10.7 per game average.
With eight points Sunday, Penn will become one of only four Gamecock women to ever score 1,500+ points, grab 500+ boards and make 200+ steals during a career (Sheila Foster, Shannon Johnson and Martha Parker).
She moved into 11th spot (with 1,492) on the South Carolina all-time scoring list, surpassing her older sister, Annie Lester, at 1,488. Penn also finds herself nine steals shy of overtaking Rita Johnson’s career record of 298 steals and becoming USC’s all-time steals leader.
Alcorn State is led by Kesirra Levy’s 15.8 points per game average while Danielle Tipton also contributes in double figures with 11.3 points per contest. Tnonealyer Powers paces ASU’s efforts on the backboards with 6.3 rebounds per contest. Alcorn State is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
The two teams have never met before and share no common opponents so far this season.
