NEW YORK, N.Y. – After a grueling first day of competition at the Armory in New York City, N.Y., the Gamecock track and field teams have made their mark on the Meet of Champions. Heading into the final day of competition, the women currently place fourth in the Championship Division, while the men place ninth. Combined, South Carolina will send eight athletes to finals competition Saturday.
In the women’s 200m dash prelims, South Carolina will send three athletes to the finals Sunday. Miki Barber finished second with a time of 23.84 while Erica Whipple finished fourth (23.90) and Aleen Bailey finished sixth (24.15).
In the 400m dash prelims, the Garnet and Black will send two to the finals as Lashinda Demus finished fourth with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 53.91. Demetria Washington, who set the Armory’s fastest time in the 400 last year at 52.36, finished sixth this year in the prelims with a time of 54.01.
Chelsea Hammond was the first Gamecock to walk away with a first place finish, winning the high jump competition with a mark of 5’8.75. Nicole Kendrick finished an impressive third in the shot put with a mark of 49’1.5″.
On the men’s side, Duan Barrino will advance to the 200m dash finals as he finished seventh in the prelims with a time of 21.66. Jonathan Fortenberry will represent Carolina in the finals of the 400m dash, finishing sixth with a time of 47.55 in the preliminaries.
Adam Bishop had an impressive seventh place finish in the Weight Throw with a mark of 53’3.50″.
The final day of competition will begin at 9:30 Saturday morning and is expected to finish around 6:00 p.m.
