2003 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament
State College, Pa. – Bryce Jordan Center
South Carolina Head Coach Susan Walvius
Opening Statement
“We are excited to be playing tomorrow, we’d much rather be playing at a truly neutral site I can tell you that especially looking at the crowd Penn State has behind them and the great fan support here. I was really impressed with that yesterday. Its going to take every bit of effort from our basketball team to come out of here with a “W.
“We have a lot of respect for Penn State, we have had an opportunity over the last day and a half to watch a lot of film on them and I think they are a great basketball team, not a good basketball team. They have great chemistry and shoot the ball very well. They execute their offenses as well as anyone in the country. We are going to have to play well to win.”
Talk about Kelly Mazzante and what you think of her game?
“I think Mazzante is a great player, she can get a basket for her team at any time. Its going to take a team effort to contain her. The nice about Penn State is they have a lot around her on the perimeter. I love No. 22 for them, I think she is a very good and intelligent player that reads defenses extremely well and I think they have nice balance.
Senior Forward Jocelyn Penn
Do you look forward to your matchup with Penn State’s Kelly Mazzante on national TV?
“I watched her play yesterday and she is obviously a great athlete. I think tomorrow its just going to be about me doing whatever I have to do to help my team win.”
Do you think you can take of advantage of Penn State in the paint?
“Watching them yesterday I don’t think they really pounded it into the post. I am hoping to take advantage of that.”
Junior Guard Kelly Morrone
Can you talk about the games Kelly Mazzante and Jocelyn Penn have?
“I think it’s like comparing apples and oranges. Jocelyn is more of an inside player, she has great moves around the basket. From what I saw of Mazzante can penetrate extremely well, draw contact and get the foul. She has more of an outside attacking game. “
What were your general impressions after watching Penn State yesterday?
“They are a great team. Being from the north I always kind of wanted to play Penn State so I am glad they are on our schedule now but not necessarily in this atmosphere. They command a lot of respect from us. Great players, they seem to know where each other are on the court extremely well. I think they are a different team than us and that will be challenging. We feel that we are ready and we just need to focus on the little things that have gotten us here.”
