COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina pole vaulter Chris Steddum was named SEC Track and Field Athlete of the Week for his performance last Saturday at the Orange and Purple Classic in Clemson, S.C. The Houston, Texas native established a meet record by clearing 17′ 0.75″ to capture his third first-place finish of the outdoor season and become the first USC male athlete to earn an outdoor conference accolade this season.

Steddum’s best mark of the year came at the Florida Relays on March 29 when he cleared 17′ 2.75″. The senior owns a career-best height of 17′ 9.5″ and holds USC’s outdoor record of 17′ 7.75″ set in 2002.

The Carolina men are ranked No. 6 in the nation and are in action this weekend in Knoxville, Tenn., at the SEC Outdoor Championships. Competition begins Thursday, May 15 and continues through Sunday, May 18.
