Seth Rose upset 29th-ranked Richard Barker of Rice in straight sets on Wednesday at the NCAA Singles Championship in Athens, Ga. The senior from West Palm Beach, Fla., defeated Barker 6-2,6-4, and will face sixth-seeded Janne Holmia (Florida), who defeated Manuel Kost (Oregon) in the first-round. Thursday’s match time is to be determined.

“I played really well today against a very good opponent,” said Rose. “Tomorrow will be another match and I have to come prepared. I will have to give 110% because there are no easy matches in this tournament. I hope to represent the University of South Carolina in a good way tomorrow and throughout the rest of the tournament.”

Last year, Rose fell in the opening round of the tournament to Nebraska’s Lance Mills in three sets. Rose is the eighth player in South Carolina men’s tennis history to make it to the round of 32 since 1985.
