July 12, 2003

University of South Carolina divers Tracey Richardson and Dean Emmerton will compete for the 2003 World Championships beginning on Sunday, July 13th in Barcelona, Spain. Emmerton will compete in the one-meter and three-meter springboard. Emmerton, a rising junior from Charlotte, N.C. is making his first appearance in the World Championships.

“My thoughts are both excitement and intimidation,” said Emmerton. “I am very excited to be traveling and representing South Africa in my sport. The competition should be lots of fun and the diving intense. Competing against all of the top athletes in the world is very intimidating, but I think I can compete on the same level as those other athletes. Many of these athletes are Olympians for their countries.”

Emmerton has set high standards for himself as he hopes to place in the top 32 for both the one-meter and the three-meter springboard.

Tracey Richardson, a rising junior on the USC diving squad is also competing in the World Championships in Barcelona. Richardson is a exercise science major from Essex, England.

The World Diving Championships run from July 13 to the 20th in Barcelona, Spain. The swimming championships start on the 21st and runs til the 28th.
