Columbia, S.C. – Erica Bowie and Ashley Gosnell each scored their first goals of the season as the South Carolina women’s soccer team (1-2) defeated Charleston Southern 2-1 for the Gamecocks’ first win of the year. Carolina concludes its homestand on Sunday afternoon 1 p.m. vs. Dartmouth at Stone Stadium.

After a scoreless first half the Gamecocks came right out of the gates in the second half with a goal less then three minutes into the second half of play. Freshman Jenna Ball’s cross from the right side into the penalty box found Bowie, who headed the ball past CSU goalkeeper Jenna Hatlestad to give the Gamecocks a 1-0 lead. The match would remain 1-0 until 80:31 when Ashley Gosnell knocked in a rebound off a shot from Jackie Welch to increase the Carolina lead to two goals. For Gosnell, a junior from Charleston, S.C. and Bishop England HS, it was her seventh career goal at Carolina.

Charleston Southern would cut the deficit to one at the 85:24 mark as Linsey Maleski nailed a direct kick into the left corner and past Carolina goalkeeper Elise Matthews. The Gamecocks finished the night with a 19-3 shot advantage vs. the Lady Bucs.

” I think we did a good job on the offensive side and had some more creative attacks,” said Coach Smith. “It was an improvement from the last two matches and we have to take that and move forward against a tough team like Dartmouth.”

Sunday afternoon’s match vs. Dartmouth will be the first between both schools. Sunday afternoon is also Scout Day, all boy and girl scouts wearing their uniform will get in for FREE. South Carolina players will also be signing autographs following the match.
