ATHENS, Ga. – Rob Cassidy and Geraldo Knorr both cruised to two victories Friday at the 2003 Southern Intercollegiate Championships at the University of Georgia and will advance to the Round of 16 Saturday morning. Saturday also features the first day of double competition.

Cassidy advances to face Colen O’Brien (Willam & Mary) Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in Division III Singles. A win would pit him against either Lasha Janashia (Georgia Southern) or Joseph Lariscy (Georgia) on Sunday morning. Cassidy received a bye in the first round and defeated Matija Sulin (Georgia State) 6-3, 6-3.

Geraldo Knorr will take on Jacob Gustafsson (Louisville) Saturday at 1 p.m. He could advance to take on Alex Jago (Memphis) or Jens Pillgram Larson (Vanderbilt) Sunday morning. Knorr defeated Thoms Bross (Stetson) 6-4, 6-0 Friday morning then beat C. Henry Trottet (Georgia Southern) 6-1, 6-0 to make the Round of 16.

In double competition, Marcus Westman and Tom Ecklund team up to face Pinto/Carvalho of Mississippi State while Knorr and Cassidy will face Cayo and Moe of Stetson. Carl Wermee and Ben Atkinson, given the No. 7 seed, will take on Secker and Thiele from Armstrong Atlantic.

Jason McAlhaney also received a bye in the first round, but fell 6-1, 6-3 to Michele Panzeri (Tennessee Tech). Kaz Otani also stumbled, dropping a tough 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 match to Stefan Rozycki of Duke in Division III Singles.

In Division I Singles, Tom Ecklund fell to 11th-seeded Jeff Kader (William & Mary) 6-3, 7-6 (5) while Marcus Westman dropped a tough 6-2, 6-2 decision to Jose Carlos Pinto (Mississippi State).

Action in the 2003 Southern Intercollegiate Championships resumes Saturday morning at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex at the University of Georgia in Athens. The tournament runs through Monday, Sept. 22.
