Columbia, S.C. – Nick Hansell’s goal at 105:47 in the second overtime lifted Davidson to a 2-1 win vs. the USC men’s soccer team on Friday evening at Stone Stadium. The win improves Davidson to 11-4-2 on the season while the loss drops the Gamecocks to 8-6-1 on the year.
The Gamecocks broke open the scoring first with a goal at 38:28 in the first half. Freshman forward Ayo Akinsete blasted a shot from 25 yards out to the right corner of the goal to give USC a 1-0 lead. The goal for Akinsete was his team-leading seventh of the season and gave the Gamecocks a one-goal edge.
The match remained 1-0 until late in the second half when Davidson scored to tie the match at one. Off a scramble in front of the goal from a corner kick, Davidson’s Matt Allen knocked the loose ball past Carolina goalkeeper Brad Guzan sending the match into overtime.
In the second overtime period, Davidson won the game on Hansell’s sixth goal of the season. A long service from David Peoples found Hansell in the box, who directed a shot over the reach of Guzan to give the Wildcats a 2-1 win.
Guzan had seven saves on th enight in goal for the Gamecocks. The Gamecocks return home on Tuesday, November 4 at 7 p.m. to host College of Charleston.
