Gainesville, Fla. – Robin Fulton scored one goal and added one assist as Florida defeated the South Carolina women’s soccer team 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Percy Beard Stadium. The win improves Florida to 14-3-1 and 6-2-1 in the SEC while the loss drops South Carolina to 10-7-3 and 3-4-2 in the SEC. South Carolina will be the eighth seed at the SEC Tournament next week held in Orange Beach Ala. Carolina will meet the top seed Tennessee Lady Volunteers on Thursday, November 6 at 12:30 p.m. ET in the first quarterfinal match of the SEC Tournament.
“We had a few mistakes and Florida was able to take advantage of the letdowns we had near the goal,” said USC head coach Shelley Smith.
Florida went ahead in the match at 19:13 with a goal from midfielder Megan McMillan. Off a cross from Robin Fulton, McMillan beat the Carolina defense near the goal and knocked a shot past Carolina goalkeeper Elise Matthews for a 1-0 Gator lead. Florida scored its second goal midway through the second half as Fulton was able to control the ball on a misplay by the Carolina defense to put in a short shot past Matthews. Matthews finished the afternoon with five saves in goal for the Gamecocks. Saturday afternoon’s match also marked the first loss by more than one goal for USC this season. Florida held a 15-4 shot advantage. Melissa Hutson led the Gamecock offense with two shots.
This season marks Carolina’s second straight year reaching the SEC Tournament. The SEC Tournament will be broadcast live on USCSPORTS.COM.
