Columbia, S.C. – The Gamecock Equestrian Team finished first and second in two western IHSA competitions at Judson College on Saturday in Marion, Al. Freshman Rachel Sternoff was named High Point Rider in the second competition after winning Open Horsemanship and finishing second in the Reining. Freshman Julia Johnson was named Reserve High Point Rider in both competitions. Johnson was second and fifth respectively in Reining and Horsemanship in the first competition and won Reining in the second.

“I was excited to do well in Reining since it was my first time competing in that division,” said Johnson. “We rode well as a team.”

Other individual first place finishers for Carolina were Courtney Borton in Open, Laura Pipkin and Elizabeth Briley in Advanced, Lindsey Weathers in Novice Horsemanship, and Ashleigh Collins and Amy Strong in Intermediate.

The western team trails Berry College in the point standings.

“To win the region we will have to ride extremely well at Berry in the spring,” said Coach Duncan. “That will be our only IHSA western competition in the spring. Our team will be up for the challenge.”

This weekend South Carolina completed their competitive fall schedule. The Gamecocks will host a series of home shows in February beginning with Kansas State on February 7.
