COLUMBIA, S.C. – Starting off the 2004 season in style, the 23rd ranked Gamecock men’s tennis team notched their first victory of the season with a 5-2 win over the College of Charleston Cougars.
Carolina sprinted out to a quick 1-0 lead, easily sprinting past the College of Charleston doubles teams with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, 8-3 and 8-1, respectively.
In singles play, Tom Eklund gave Carolina a two point lead with a speedy 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Cougar’s Time Siebert. Carl Wermee added to that with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Basiten Moldhenke at No. 3 doubles.
Wrapping up the match for Carolina was Ben Atkinson at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win over Liran Kling and Geraldo Knorr clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Seth Bowman.
Carolina faces UNC-Wilmington following the match against Charleston.
