COLUMBIA, S.C. – Head Coach Kent DeMars notched his 299th win as the Carolina head coach as the No. 23 Gamecocks downed the Radford Highlanders 7-0 Sunday afternoon. South Carolina (4-0) maintained its perfect record through the young 2004 season.
“I was more pleased this weekend and we’re only two matches into the season,” said DeMars. “We played better matches today than last weekend. That’s what it’s all about, getting better each weekend. Last week, they kind of ran out of gas and we didn’t do that this week. That’s why we play double matches. Eight hours on the court will get us in shape for later on down the line. We had two good wins today.”
Once again, Carolina took the doubles point with all three doubles teams notching a win. At No. 1 doubles, Tom Eklund and Marcus Westman swept past Brandon Johnson and Dominic Soeur 8-1. Geraldo Knorr and Pedro Rodrigues topped Andre Cavaco and Arthur Vasarevic at No. 2 doubles, 8-1. Finishing out the sweep at No. 3 doubles was Ben Atkinson and Carl Wermee topping Robel Mengisteab and Joakim Arhammar, 8-3.
In singles action, Tom Eklund posted a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over Brandon Johnson at No. 1 singles. Carl Wermee had a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Arthur Vasarevic at No. 2 singles. Pedro Rodrigues notched his second victory as a Gamecocks as he easily topped Andre Cavaco, 6-2, 6-0.
At No. 4 singles, Geraldo Knorr topped Joakim Arhammar, 6-0, 6-1. Ben Atkinson quickly posted a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles over Robel Mengisteab while Rob Cassidy notched a win at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-3 over Dominic Soeur.
