Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina equestrian team finished a close second behind Berry College at the IHSA Zone 5 Region 2 in Rome, Ga. Hosted by Berry College, the event was held Feb. 28-29 and the Gamecocks came within three points of winning the Hunt Seat competition.

The Gamecocks were led by Tara Brothers, who was named overall High Point rider in Hunt Seat, as well as in the region. Freshman Rachel Sternoff was named Reserve High Point rider in Western. The Gamecocks had a total of eleven riders qualify for Regionals at the event. USC had three riders who qualified in more than one class, including Brothers, Laura Pipkin and Amy Strong.

“We are taking a very strong group of individuals to Regionals and then on to Zones,” said Head Coach Boo Duncan.

The Gamecocks had several riders contribute to their success. Listed below are the riders who participated in the Regional competitions last week in Erskine, S.C.:

Hunt Seat:

Open Flat: Tara Brothers, Dana Hancock Open Fences: Tara Brothers Intermediate Fences: Chelsea Koornick Novice Flat: Lisa Boykin, Laura Pipkin Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter: Amy Strong, Kyra Hufford

Western:

Open: Rachel Sternoff Advanced: Laura Pipkin Novice: Lindsey Weathers Intermediate: Ashleigh Collins, Amy Strong
