Senior Mike Boynton, Jr. and junior Carlos Powell both inched their way up the USC record books this year, leading USC to a 23-11 record in men’s basketball. The team, which finished with an 8-8 record in the SEC, fell to Memphis in the first round of the NCAA Tournament 59-43.
Powell scored his 1000th and 1001st points of his career in the NCAA Tournament first round game vs. Memphis. Powell will enter his senior year with 1001 career points and 433 career rebounds.
Powell led the team in rebounds and points per game this season – he is the first player to do so since John Hudson did it in 1988-89. Powell had 12.2 ppg and 6.2 rpg. The 1988-89 season Hudson averaged 14.8 ppg and 7.7 rpg. Powell led the team in ppg for the second straight year.
Boynton finished his career in the top 10 of five career categories and in the top 10 of five season categories. Most importanly, he took over the school record for most games played, with 125. The previous record of 123 games played was held by BJ McKie and Aaron Lucas.
