STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. – Paced by a 10th-place finish from junior Alex Hamilton, the South Carolina men’s golf team carded a team round of 2-under-par on Tuesday to finish second at the Atlanta Intercollegiate in Stockbridge, Ga. The two-day 54-hole tournament was held at the par-72, 6,899-yard Eagle’s Landing Country Club.
The Gamecocks’ third-round score of 286 was the third best of the day, as South Carolina finished the tournament with a team score of 11-under-par, 278-289-286-853, recording its third-straight top-three team finish. That score was 14 shots behind the total of team champion and top-ranked Florida, which finished at 25-under-par, 279-276-284-839.
Hamilton led four Gamecocks in the event’s top 15 as he tied with one other player in 10th place, following his final-round score of 4-under-par, 68, to finish with a 54-hole total of 72-72-68-212. He was eight shots off the pace of individual champion Camilo Villegas of Florida, who finished the event with a 12-under-par, score of 69-67-68-204.
The next South Carolina individual in the field was sophomore Eirik Johansen, who was part of a three-way tie for 12th place, as he carded an even-par 72 on Tuesday for a 54-hole total of 3-under-par, 66-75-72-213. Junior Martin Rominger and sophomore Jake Thompson, both of whom tied for 15th place with scores of 68-73-73-214 and 72-69-73-214, respectively, followed Johansen. The final member of the Gamecock contingent in the field was sophomore Robert Svensson, who finished 59th at 78-78-77-233.
South Carolina will have little time off before returning to action, as the Gamecocks will travel to Augusta, Ga., on April 3-4 to compete in the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational, which will be held at the par-72, 7,231-yard Forest Hills Golf Club.
