More than 550 event participants began play in the 2004 Wachovia Junior Hardcourt Championships on the University of South Carolina campus. Tournament play will continue through Wednesday at four sites – the Columbia Tennis Center, Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center, USC Indoor Tennis Courts, and Sam Daniel Tennis Center.

In the Boys’ 16 tournament, ninth-seeded Eric Claggett of West Columbia defeated Pete Supan 6-0, 6-2 to advance to face Dirk Bair of Moncks Corner tomorrow at 11 a.m. Bair outlasted William Horton 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-3 in his first match to set up the showdown with Claggett. Also in the Boys’ 16 tournament, Kaleb Barnes of Irmo was a decisive, 6-0, 6-0 winner over David Ouellet.

Top-seed Lauren Trumbell, of Anderson, advanced with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kelsey Timmerman in the Girls’ 12 tournament. Trumbell will face Columbia native Amanda Teague. Teague advanced with a 6-4, 7-5 thriller over Rachel Hawes of Mount Pleasant. Also advancing in this bracket was second-seeded Avery Owens of Clinton. Owens was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Clair Larkin of Lexington.

The top-seed in the Girls’ 18 tournament will take to the court Saturday. In the girls’ draw, top-seeded Renee Joseph will face off against Kacie Knox at 11 a.m. at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center. Also at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center, Columbia favorite and fourth-seeded Lauren Prickett will take the courts against Dana Richards at 11:30 a.m.
