The 2004 Wachovia Junior Hardcourt Championships continued on Sunday with the top-seed and second-seed advancing to the finals in the Boys’ 18 Singles tournament. Top-seeded Chris Peek, of Lexington, advanced to the finals with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Greenville’s James O’neal. Peek advances to face Darlington’s Alan Howle. Howle, the second-seed, defeated West Columbia’s Ben McFarland 6-2, 7-6(3) in a thrilling match.
In the Boys’ 10 Doubles tournament, the second-seeded duo of Daniel Wilson and Joseph Tiller advanced with a convincing 8-3 victory over Jacob Behal and Britt Wells. Wilson and Tiller will move on to the finals and face Alex Howle and Payne Hoy. Howle and Hoy upset the top-seeded duo of Alan Pearce and Alan Thomas 8-2. The final will be played at 5 p.m. on Monday at the USC Indoor Tennis Courts.
In Girls’ 18 action, Dana Richards continued her tear through the bracket by upsetting fifth-seeded Tracey Cooke 6-3, 6-2. Richards, of Charleston, has upset the fourth and fifth seeds in the tournament and looks to continue her quest for a championship tomorrow when she faces top-seeded Renee Joseph at 11 a.m. at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center. Joseph, of Rock Hill, was victorious today against Jessie Bowers by a score of 6-0, 6-0.
Mallory Cecil continued her trek through the Girls’ 14 Singles tournament with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Lindsay Wilburn. Cecil, of Spartanburg, will face Lexington’s Cory Bowen in tomorrow’s match at 11 a.m. at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center. Bowen, the tournament’s fifth-seed, was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Columbia’s Beth Cotter.
In tomorrow’s action, the Girls’ 10 Doubles champion will be crowned when the top-seeded duo of Isabel Dennis and Patricia Kirkland go head-to-head with the Simpsonville duo of Hayley Behal and Ansley Speaks. Speaks and Behal were 8-4 winners over Emily Erickson and Maecy Seawright. The Girls’ 10 Doubles final will take place at 5 p.m. at the USC Indoor Tennis Courts.
