Columbia, S.C. –
Six champions were crowned on day five of the 2004 Wachovia Junior Hardcourt Championships. Lauren Prickett won the Girl’s Sportsmanship Award while Marshall Rowe earned the Boy’s Sportsmanship Award. Prickett played in the Girls’18 singles bracket while Rowe competed in the Boys’ 12 bracket. Prickett and Rowe are both from Columbia.

In the Girls’ 16 singles tournament, third-seeded Haley Baird, of Columbia, took home the hardware with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 victory over Pawleys Island native Allison Stanford. Baird was also a champion in 2002 when she won the Girls’ 14 bracket.

In Girls’ 16 doubles, the duo of Mallory Cecil and Amanda Malatek defeated Margaret Strom and Cleveland Covington 8-0 to win the championship. With today’s victory Malatek took home her third Wachovia championship trophy. Malatek was also a winner in the Girls’ 12 singles tournament in 2002 and Girls’ 12 doubles tournament in 2001.

Maria Hesketh and Alexis Prickett won the Girls’ 12 doubles bracket with a 8-6 victory over Lauren Armstrong and Kelly Cameron. Prickett, of Columbia, has now won five titles at the Wachovia championships including 2002 and 2003 in which she swept both the singles and doubles titles. Hesketh earned her second title today in Girls’ 12 singles tournament when she defeated Lauren Trumbell 6-3, 6-7(8), 6-4 in an exciting match.

In Boys’ 10 singles, Joseph Tiller defeated Payne Hoy 6-1, 6-1 to win the bracket. Tiller, of Camden, was also a winner in the Boys’ 10 doubles tournament.

Thomas Ligon and Zachary Rigsby will battle tomorrow to determine the champion of the Boys’ 14 singles tournament. Ligon, of Georgetown, was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Derek Dickey. Rigsby advanced with a thrilling 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Wesley Moran.
