COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina sophomore men’s golf All-American Eirik Johansen turned in three strong rounds, but came up just two strokes shy of qualifying for the 2004 British Open Championship.
The Stavanger, Norway, native advanced out of regional qualifying on July 5, by firing a round of 67 to finish third at the Hindhead Golf Club in Surrey, England. That performance moved Johansen into final local qualifying at the Turnberry Kintyre Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland.
Johansen finished the 36-hole qualifier on Sunday with a score of 5-under-par, 71-68-139. That total was only two shots off the pace of a four-way tie for first place and four berths in the British Open at 7-under-par, 137.
