COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Former South Carolina soccer star Clint Mathis was among 23 players that U.S. Men’s National Team coach Bruce Arena called into camp to train for upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, the U.S. Soccer Federation recently announced. Mathis, who played for the Gamecocks from 1994-97, currently plays professionally for Hanover 96 of the German Bundesliga.

Mathis and the U.S. team will meet El Salvador on Saturday, Sept. 4, in Foxboro, Mass., at 4 p.m. ET. The match will be televised by Fox Sports World and tape delayed on Telemundo at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT. Four days later, the team makes the trip to Panama City to face Panama on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez. On the national level, Mathis, a midfielder, has competed in 41 matches and scored 11 goals for the U.S. team.

At South Carolina, Mathis finished his career as the third all-time leading scorer in school history with 121 points (53g, 15a). He was a three-time finalist for the Hermann Trophy and the MAC Player of the Year award.
