PHILADELPHIA – The No. 18/24 South Carolina men’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on the road, falling to the University of Pennsylvania, 2-1, in the Penn Soccer Classic on Friday at Rhodes Field in Philadelphia. The Gamecocks slipped to 4-1 while the Quakers evened their record at 2-2.
“We played a good team on the road,” Carolina head coach Mark Berson said. “I think we learned that there are some things we need to work on, and we certainly have some improving to do before Sunday’s match against Princeton. We showed real character to come back and tie the game, but we let it get away from us and we need to change that.”
After a scoreless first half, the Quakers were the first team to find the back of the net. In the 63rd minute of play, Joshua Duyan scored his first goal of the season.
South Carolina tied things up in the 71st minute when freshman Sebastian Lindholm scored his second goal of the season off Eric Seszycki’s free kick.
Penn tallied the game-winner in the 78th minute when Stephen Kroculick knocked in the game-winning goal from the right side. Duyan assisted on the play.
The Gamecocks forced Penn goalkeeper Daniel Cepero to make eight saves, but were only able to score once on 15 shots. Sophomore goalie Brad Guzan picked up four saves for Carolina. Penn finished the game with 14 shot attempts.
USC is back in action on Sunday as it battles the Princeton Tigers in its final game of the Penn Soccer Classic. Kickoff for the match is set for Noon.
