COLUMBIA, S.C. – The first day of the 2004 USC Fall Invitational went pretty much as well as expected for the South Carolina men’s tennis team on Friday. The morning showers that soaked Columbia would be just about the only thing to stop the Gamecocks on this day, as Carolina posted an impressive 10-3 team record, including a 6-1 record in singles play. The Gamecocks picked up straight set wins in five of the six singles victories. USC won twice in the tournament’s main draw as second-seeded Tom Eklund won 6-1, 6-1 against Thiago Barbosa from Winthrop, and eighth-seeded Jamie Cuellar won 6-2, 6-0 over David Mellis of Coastal Carolina. The day’s biggest upsets happened in the B-3 Singles draw, a bracket without a Gamecock representative, where the first, third and fourth seeds were all bounced in the first round. Tournament play for Day 2 begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, October 16. Once again the action can be found at the Sam Daniels Tennis Facility, Columbia Tennis Center, Maxcy-Gregg Tennis Courts, or the USC Indoor Facility.
