COLUMBIA, S.C.- South Carolina freshman Mark Anderson is the Southeastern Conference’s Golfer of the Week for the second straight week, the league office announced on Wednesday. Anderson and Mississippi State senior Joey Deraney share the honor after capturing medalist honors at their respective tournaments.
Anderson finished first at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational in Statesboro, Ga., March 19-20. The Beaufort, S.C., product fired a one-under par 215 for three rounds and defeated Jon David Kennedy of tournament host-Georgia Southern in two-hole playoff to claim the title. Anderson was the only golfer in the field to shoot par or better in all three rounds.
Following back-to-back first place finishes, Anderson has moved up to No. 7 in the Golfweek Individual Rankings and ranks ninth in scoring average in the SEC this season at 72.13 strokes per round. Anderson tied for first at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship in Las Vegas, March 11-13. He has three top-five finishes in five events in 2004-05.
MSU’s Deraney won the Homewood Suites Intercollegiate, March 21-22, in Mobile, Ala., and helped lead the Bulldogs to the team title.
South Carolina, ranked No. 18 in this week^s Golfweek Team Rankings, returns to action March 27-29 as it competes in the Hootie at Bulls Bay at Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, S.C.
