Columbia, S.C. –
South Carolina volleyball hosted their annual spring tournament this past weekend and under the guidance of new head coach Nancy Somera, USC went 4-0. The event was held at the Strom Thurmond Center as the Gamecocks hosted College of Charleston, Georgia, Furman and Winthrop in an all day tournament on Saturday. Coach Somera was pleased with the improvements she saw from the team and was able to pinpoint areas the team can focus on during the next two weeks of spring training.

“I liked the way we competed today. We are making improvements in some of the areas we have been focusing on in practice. That is good to see,” said Somera. “We made quality first contacts and we improved on good court movement on defense. However, we still have things to work on. We missed too many serves so we will continue to work on that.”

The Gamecocks won all of the best of three matches they played. USC went 2-0 against Winthrop, Furman and Georgia. The only match the Gamecocks took a loss in was against College of Charleston where they went 2-1. C of C, Winthrop and Georgia are three teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament this past year.

This is the final tournament of the spring for USC. Spring training will conclude in two weeks. During those final weeks, Coach Somera and her staff will continue to work with the team on individual and team drills.
