A record 12 of 17 University of South Carolina athletic programs posted a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or better for the Spring 2005 semester. The overall mean GPA of its 432 student-athletes was also a record high at 2.959.
The Gamecock women’s golf team posted the highest GPA ever for a USC team at 3.832.
“I am sure the University is pleased with the continued progress in the academic performance of the young people who represent USC on the fields, courts and in the swimming pools,” said USC Athletics Director Mike McGee.
The following 12 teams posted over a 3.0 GPA: Women’s Basketball (their all-time high), Equestrian, Men’s Golf, Women’s Golf (school’s all-time high), Men’s Soccer, Women’s Soccer, Softball, Women’s Swimming and Diving, Men’s Tennis, Women’s Tennis, Women’s Track and Field and Volleyball (their all-time high). Thirty student-athletes recorded perfect 4.0 GPAs and were named to the President’s List, while 113 student-athletes were named to the Dean’s List.
The overall GPA for the athletics department for the spring semester was 2.959, which once again closely mirrored that of the USC student body (3.001). This spring, the mean GPA for the women’s student-athletes was 3.272 and mean GPA for the men’s student athletes was 2.730.
