STANFORD, Calif. — The South Carolina men’s golf team wrapped up the final round of the NCAA West Regional in a tie for 10th-place with Southern California and Pepperdine, but fell on the first hole of a playoff Saturday at Stanford Golf Course and failed to advance to the NCAA Championship.

Carolina turned in its best round of the weekend as a team by shooting a 287. Along with Southern Cal and Pepperdine, the Gamecocks finished 24-over par with a total score of 864. The top 10 teams from each of three Regionals and the top two individuals not on those teams moved on to compete in the NCAA Championship. The Trojans defeated Carolina and Pepperdine in the team playoff to clinch the 10th team spot.

Senior Alex Hamilton fired a 68 on Saturday, the best round of any Gamecock this weekend, and finished tied for 12th. Hamilton lost a one-hole playoff to Pepperdine’s Michael Putnam for the second invidual spot and Putnam qualified for the NCAA Championship. Oregon’s Gregg Lavoie, who finished tied for 10th individually, earned the first individual spot for NCAAs.

Hamilton was two-over in his final collegiate tournament with scores of 74-70-68=212. The Aiken, S.C., native jumped out to a quick start with an eagle on No. 1. He also birdied No. 7 and No. 10.

Junior Eirik Johansen (Stavanger, Norway) was one-under par through nine holes after firing an eagle on No. 7 and hitting a birdie on No. 8. He remained one-under through No. 15, but struggled the rest of the way, taking double-bogeys on 16 and 18 to finish at +3. Johansen closed the tournament at 70-74-73=217 (+7).

Freshman Mark Anderson (Beaufort, S.C.), who birdied 9 and 16, tied with Johansen after shooting a 73 on Saturday to finish at 72-72-73=217 (+7). The pair tied for 39th.

Redshirt junior West Streib (Atlanta, Ga.) carded a 73 on Saturday and wrapped up the tournament in a tie for 80th. Streib was 73-78-73=224 (+14).

Junior Robert Svensson rounded out the Gamecock lineup in a tie for 111th. Svennson finished with scores of 80-72-77=224 (+14).
