Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina student-athletes topped the SEC 2005 Spring Academic Honor Roll with the most honorees on the academic roster, announced Thursday by SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, and the Gamecock track and field athletes make up approximately one third of those named to the list.
USC totaled 89 student-athletes on the SEC Honor Roll, the most by any school in the conference, followed by Georgia with 86 and Florida with 83. Among the Gamecocks named to the honor roll are 26 track and field athletes.
“I’m proud of our students for their academic achievement,” said USC Head Coach Curtis Frye. “Academic and athletics go hand in hand and we’re here at the NCAA championship with many of those athletes. Several of those named to the list were given a chance to come to the university because of their athletic and academic ability. They spend a lot of time working on both and I’m proud that our institution has given these athletes the chance to meet both their academic and athletic abilities.”
