The 2005 Wachovia Junior Hardcourt Championships continued Monday on the University of South Carolina campus. The tournament will continue through Thursday at four locations: Sam Daniels (Girls and Boys 18), Columbia Tennis Center (Girls and Boys 14, and 16), Maxcy Gregg (Boys and Girls 12), and the USC Indoor Tennis Facility (Boys and Girls 10).

In the boys 18 singles, top-seeded Caleb Barnes of Irmo continued his quest toward being crowned state champion by defeating Columbia’s Luke Whiteside 6-3,6-4. Barnes will now face Florence native Ross Moyer who is the #4 seed in the draw on Tuesday at 11 am at the Sam Daniels Tennis Center.

Simpsonville’s Paul Appleby is looking to play spoiler as he knocked off the third seeded Nicholas McAlister on Sunday and then advanced to the semifinals with a three set victory against William Simpson of Hilton Head. Appleby will face fifth seeded Eric Clagget of West Columbia on Tuesday at 11 am. Claggett advanced to the semifinal with a 6-4,7-5 upset win over #2 seed Troy Freeman.

Unlike the boys 18 singles draw, the girls 18 will have three of the top four seeds battling it out for a chance to play in the championship which will be held on Wednesday.

Dana Richards, the #1 seed advanced to play Haley Baird on Tuesday with a 6-0,6-2 victory against Priscilla Jamison. Baird advanced to the semifinal with a 7-5,6-2 win over Ashley Mitchell. Emily Dyar and Elizabeth Appleby will be the other semifinal match in the girls 18. Dyar upset second seeded Colby Kucharski with a 6-3,6-2 victory. Appleby, a native of Simpsonville, is the three seed.

In the 18 year old doubles, 12-year old Alexis Prickett and 17-year old Caroline Cotter defeated the top seeded team of Alexandra LaCoste and Elizabeth Stall, 8-6 to advance to the final which will be held on Tuesday at 4 pm. Prickett and Cotter, who are both from Columbia, will face Dana Richards and Syreeta Thompson who took an 8-5 win against the #2 seed team of Andrea Richmond and Allison Stanford on Monday.
