Columbia, S.C. – The opening round of the 2005 Wachovia Junior Davis Cup saw all but one of the top eight seeds advance. Middle States upset No. 8 seed Northern California 5-2 on Saturday at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Facility.

Middle States jumped off to an early 1-0 lead by sweeping the doubles action. In singles, Northern California could only manage to take two of the six singles contest as they would play close in one of the closest matches of the day.

Texas the top seeded section in the tournament, defeated Mid-Atlantic 6-1 to advance to face the Middle States on Sunday. Eastern, Southern Cal, Southern, and Florida all advanced in the main draw with a 7-0 victory on Saturday. Missouri Valley defeated Intermountain 6-1 to advance while New England defeated Caribbean 4-0 in the 8am feed-in match. The match in between Midwest and New England was moved indoors because of inclement weather. Midwest went on to win the match by taking at least three of the singles matches.

The 2005 Wachovia Junior Davis Cup will continue tomorrow starting at 8:00am at the Sam Daniel Tennis Center, the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Center, and the Columbia Tennis Center. All championship matches will be played at the Sam Daniels while back draw matches will be played at the other two sites.
