Boone, N.C. – South Carolina Cross Country finished seventh at the Appalachian State Blue Ridge Open on Friday evening in Boone, N.C.

The Gamecocks were among 11 teams that competed in the 5K invitational held on a wet State Farm Cross Country Course. North Carolina teams dominated the event with Davidson finishing in first place with a score of 38 points; Appalachian State totaled 70 points for second place, while High Point finished third with a total of 104.

Leading the Gamecocks to a 158-point finish was junior Rebecca Chain who came in 23rd with a time of 19:36. Freshman Anna Petrov moved to the No. 2 spot for South Carolina with a 30th place finish, running 19:54. Also finishing for the Gamecocks were Nicki Breves (20:14) in 37th, Theresa Verostek (20:20), Kelsey Bristol (20:25), Kayla Curtis (21:12), Jess Smith (21:32), Becky Woods (21:45) and Danielle Franklin (22:01).

“We didn’t do as well as we would have liked this close to the conference championship,” said USC Cross Country Coach Stan Rosenthal. “The course was wet and slow, but we still should have done better. From here we will continue to work on improving our times and hopefully we’ll be ready for the SEC Championship in two weeks.”

The Gamecocks are off next week but will be preparing for the SEC Championship, hosted by South Carolina at Hilton Field at Fort Jackson on October 29th. For more information on the championship, go to www.uscsports.com.
