Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina sophomore midfielder Kimmy Gillespie has been named to the 2005 SEC Women’s Soccer Good Works Team. Gillespie, an exercise science major, has contributed to Team Gamecocks in a variety of projects over the last two years. The Simpsonville, S.C. native was involved with the HOST program at Keels Elementary School, worked as a volunteer at Children’s CHANCE dinner and the Harvest Hope Food Drive and helped with the Scholastic Read 2004 at L.W. Conder Elementary School, a reading program designed to promote school children to the fundamentals of education.

“Kimmy is a team player with a good heart,” said USC head coach Shelley Smith. “She’s caring and shows that in what she does both on and off the field. She’s a real good person to have on this team with her makeup and dedication. I’m happy that she has been recognized for her extra efforts.”

After suffering a knee injury vs. Davidson in the first exhibition game of the 2005 season, Gillespie quickly bounced back to play in the final 12 regular season matches of the year with eight consecutive starts to end the season. Gillespie also tallied her first goal of the year, a game-winner in the 3-0 Carolina win at LSU on October 23 in Baton Rouge.

The SEC sponsors Good Works Teams for all 20 league sponsored sports. The Good Works Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to the their community in superior service efforts. This year’s team was the third annual for women’s soccer.
