Greenville, N.C. – South Carolina cross country wrapped up their 2005 season with a 24th-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship in Greenville, N.C. on Saturday afternoon. The championship was hosted by East Carolina University on their home course of Lake Kristi.

The Gamecocks, who remained consistent all season, concluded the meet with 676 points and one runner in the top 100th. South Carolina finished ahead of Gardner-Webb, East Carolina, West Carolina and Charleston. Duke claimed the title with 33 points and two runners in the top three.

“We had one girl who had to drop out of the competition due to a foot injury. Other than that, our girls ran pretty consistent throughout the race,” said USC Cross Country Coach Stan Rosenthal. “Hopefully, we’ll have a good track season and come back strong next fall.”

Leading the Gamecocks was sophomore Rebecca Chain, who finished 78th with a time of 22:24. Junior Nicki Breves came in 136th with a time of 23:33, while freshman Theresa Verostek finished 155th, running 24:06. Also finishing for the Gamecocks were freshmen Anna Petrov (24:03), Kelsey Bristol (24:37) and Megan Robers (24.37). Senior Shay Shelton did not finish due to injury.
