USC Head Coach Susan Walvius:
On the game:
“I liked how we started and I liked the first five minutes of the second half. We still need to work on our turnovers; it’s something we’re going to focus on. We had some really great individual performances tonight as well, Demetress Adams had a double-double in her first game and I really liked the heart Lauren Simms showed getting on the floor and after the loose balls. Everyone is working hard, there’s no one who isn’t. But I’d like to see more of the getting to the floor and showing the heart we saw from Lauren tonight.”
On the freshmen in tonight’s game:
“We saw some jitters and you’re going to see that in their first games. When they get more comfortable and get some experience you’re going to see some unbelievable basketball from those two (Brionna Dickerson and Demetress Adams).”
On the defense:
“We had moments of playing the way we wanted to play. We need more aggressive defense and I think this team needs to be known for its defense. I know they have the athletic ability to do that. I want to see a lot more of the steals converted into points, and I think we’ll see that as we get into January and February.”
Junior Forward Melanie Johnson:
On playing with the team in the first game:
“I was a little nervous at first, I wanted to see how everyone handled the pressure of a real game versus a practice one.”
