COLUMBIA, S.C. — Incoming South Carolina freshmen Sarah Cline and Meredith Moorhead earned all-tournament honors after leading their club team, CJV 18 Slam, to a national title in the Gold Division of the Girls’ National Tournament at the USA Volleyball Junior Olympic Championships in Atlanta. Moorhead was selected tournament MVP as well.
The Slam opened play with a 2-0 (27-25, 25-16) victory over the Milwaukee Sting 18 Gold and next defeated Oz Volleyball Club 18 by a 2-1 (27-25, 24-26, 15-12) count in the semifinals. In the championship match, CJV 18 Slam prevailed in a 26-24, 25-22 sweep of Coast 18 Karl.
Moorhead, who hails from Charlotte, N.C., was a Prepvolleyball.com All-American as a senior playing the outside hitter position. She helped Providence High School win the 2002, 2004 and 2005 North Carolina State 4A Championships. Moorhead also was tabbed MVP at the state tournament her senior year, and the Charlotte Observer named her its 2005 Player of the Year.
Cline, a defensive specialist from Rock Hill, S.C., was named the South Carolina High School Volleyball State 4A Region 3 Player of the Year in 2005 and was a member of the all-state team. The two-time captain of Northwestern High School made the all-region team as a junior and was selected to USA Volleyball’s all-region team in 2006.
The Gamecock volleyball team begins preseason training Monday, Aug. 7. South Carolina opens the 2006 season in Fort Worth, Texas, over Aug. 25-26 playing in a tournament hosted by TCU.
