CHAPEL HILL, N.C.–The University of South Carolina men’s tennis team opened its fall season on Friday at the UNC Fall Invitational, presented by One-A-Day Vitamins in Chapel Hill. The Gamecocks earned five first-round wins in singles, including three by true freshmen competing in their first collegiate matches.
Senior Pedro Rodrigues cruised to a 6-0, 6-0, victory over Maryland’s David Kwon in the A-1 Singles Flight. Rodrigues will face Steve Dean of Charleston Southern in his second round match at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Two Gamecocks are competing in the A-2 Singles Flight and both came away winners in their opening round matches. Junior Yevgeny Supeko rolled to a 6-2, 6-3, win against Martin Redelinghuys of UNC-Greensboro. Freshman Pedro Campos outlasted Wofford’s George Kernodle, 6-3, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (1). Supeko will battle Boris Fetbroyt of Maryland while Campos faces Alex Stone of Duke at 9 a.m. Saturday.
In the B-1 Singles Flight, freshmen Spencer Feldman and David Wolff were victorious. Feldman earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ramsey Lamaich of Navy. Wolff topped Wofford’s Christopher Williams, 6-1, 6-0. Both players return to action at 9 a.m. Saturday. Feldman takes on NC State’s David Rozek and Wolff plays Adrian Lai of Navy.
In the B-2 Singles Flight, redshirt sophomore Thomas Stoddard fell in three sets to James Trussler of High Point, 6-2, 5-7, 6-0. Junior Joseph Veeder dropped his opening match to Scott Collins of Wofford, 7-5, 6-3. Veeder will face High Point’s Ben Deloume at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow and Stoddard takes on Richard Cahi of Wofford at 12 p.m.
Rodrigues and Campos teamed for an 8-4 win over Notten and Deloume of High Point in A Flight first round doubles action. Wolff and Supeko fell, 8-4, to Rozek and Prandecki of NC State, also in A Flight doubles play.
In B Flight Doubles, Stoddard and Feldman fell to Dean and David of Charleston Southern, 8-3.
South Carolina will continue play in the UNC Fall Invitational, presented by One-A-Day Vitamins throughout the weekend.
