ABOUT THE WEEK
SETTING THE SCENE: The South Carolina Gamecocks (10-7, 3-3 SEC) take on their fourth ranked opponent this season when they travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to face No. 18 Tennessee (13-3, 4-2 SEC) on Friday at 7 p.m. Two days later, Carolina heads north to Lexington, Ky., to take on the Kentucky Wildcats (9-5, 2-4 SEC) at 1:30 p.m.
USC’S LAST TIME OUT: South Carolina held a 2-0 lead after the first two games versus Alabama on Sunday but could not close out the Crimson Tide for the victory. Shonda Cole finished with 31 kills to mark her sixth 30-kill match of the season, which tops the country, and she added 15 digs for her fifth double-double. Marija Milosevic tallied 15 kills for her eighth match this year with 10-plus kills.
THE TENNESSEE SERIES: Tennessee has won the last six match-ups with South Carolina and holds a narrow 24-22 edge in the all-time series. Prior to UT’s six wins in a row, USC won four straight and claimed 14 in a row from 1994 to 2000. South Carolina’s last victory in Knoxville, Tenn., and the overall series came Nov. 8, 2002, by a 3-0 count. The Gamecocks and Lady Volunteers’ history dates back to 1974, when Tennessee won a 2-0 decision at a tournament hosted by East Tennessee State.
THE KENTUCKY SERIES: Kentucky leads the all-time series with South Carolina by a 17-16 margin and has won four in a row over the Gamecocks. USC won eight in a row prior to its current four-match losing streak to the Wildcats. UK won nine consecutive matches to start the series before USC went on to win 16 of the next 20 from 1994 to 2003.
ORANGE CRUSH, ANYONE?: South Carolina has a chance to do something that has never been done before in its history on Friday. If the Gamecocks can defeat Tennessee it would mark the first time they have beaten Clemson, Florida and the Lady Volunteers in the same season.
