HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 11 South Carolina men’s soccer team lost a Conference USA road match to Marshall, 2-1, on Saturday night at Sam Hood Field in Huntington, W.Va. The Gamecocks slipped to 10-3 overall and 3-2 in league play while the Thundering Herd improved to 4-7-1 and 1-3 in conference play.
South Carolina out-shot the Thundering Herd 15-12, including a 10-5 advantage in the second half, but senior Ryan Leeton’s first-half penalty kick was all the offense the Gamecocks could muster.
Marshall took the lead in the 21st minute on a goal by Karim Boukhemis. Kolby Lacrone led Boukhemis with a pass behind the Gamecock defense and Boukhemis knocked the ball into the far corner of the goal from 15 yards out.
The Gamecocks leveled the score at the 33-minute mark when Leeton tallied his third goal of the season on a penalty kick.
Marshall regained the lead in the second half with a goal from JD Hill. Hill’s one-time volley from near the top of the 18-yard box found the back of the net at the 59:49 mark. Boukhemis was credited with an assist on the play.
Freshman Jeff Scannella led South Carolina with six shots, and the Gamecocks took five corner kicks and allowed Marshall just three. Goalkeeper Mike Gustavson made four saves, all in the first half, for Carolina; Brad Kennedy finished with two saves for The Herd. A total 39 fouls were called, including 23 on Marshall.
South Carolina is back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 18, when it travels to Dallas, Texas, to face No. 1 SMU. The 8 p.m. ET contest will be televised tape delay by CSTV.
