COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (23-30, 24-30, 24-30) setback to Arkansas on Friday in Columbia, S.C. The Gamecocks fell to 12-12 and 5-8 in the Southeastern Conference and the Lady Razorbacks improved to 13-8 and 6-7 in the league.

USC’s Shonda Cole led all attackers with 22 kills and 36 attempts and committed just five errors for a stellar .472 hitting percentage. Marija Milosevic tallied seven kills and four digs for the Gamecocks. Petra Lorenzi recorded 23 assists, while Alexcis Thomson had a season-high 14.

Denitza Koleva led the Lady’Backs’ attack with 19 kills on 42 tries. Christina Lawrence and Amy Allison had eight apiece. Koleva posted a double-double with 11 digs while adding four blocks as well. Caira Daugherty had 24 assists and Lindsay Scanlan racked up 22.

Arkansas out-hit South Carolina .270 (50-20-111) to .182 (42-21-115) and had a 40-36 advantage in digs. Both teams had five blocks and the Lady’Backs tallied seven aces to the Gamecocks’ four.

The Lady’Backs had a 14-6 advantage in the first game when Allison recorded a kill, but Carolina went on to win the next five points to close the deficit to three. After climbing within three at 16-13, USC dropped the ensuing three rallies and never managed to recover. Arkansas later led by as many as nine, 25-16, after another kill from Allison.

Cole served up her second ace of game two to give Carolina a 5-2 advantage, but Arkansas responded by winning the next five rallies to lead by two. The Gamecocks were still within two at 23-21 after a kill by Lynae Vanden Hull, but Arkansas claimed the next four points before coasting through the remainder of the stanza.

Game three was tied 20-20, and USC made a couple hitting errors to put Arkansas ahead by two. Cole pulled Carolina within a point, 24-23, with her 21st kill of the match, however, the Lady’Backs countered with a kill by Koleva and then were the beneficiaries of two attacking misfires by the Gamecocks. Koleva closed out the match with another kill to give Arkansas the shutout.

South Carolina next faces No. 10 LSU (19-3, 11-2) on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the Volleyball Competition Facility.
