COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina’s volleyball team lost a 3-1 (31-29, 23-30, 21-30, 19-30) decision to No. 10 LSU on Sunday in Columbia, S.C. The Gamecocks saw their record fall to 12-13 and 5-9 in the Southeastern Conference and the Tigers improved to 20-3 and 12-2 in the league.
USC freshman Meredith Moorhead contributed a dozen kills for a career high and added three blocks. Shonda Cole reached double digits in kills as well with 13, as did Marija Milosevic with 11. Petra Lorenzi had her third career double-double and first of 2006 thanks to 22 assists and 13 digs. Alexcis Thomson fell one dig short of a double-double by contributing 21 assists. Sarah Cline dug a match-high 17 balls, which also was the best tally of her career
Kyna Washington and Marina Skender each posted 20 kills to lead the Tigers’ offense. Skender had a double-double as well by adding 14 digs. Melody Clark had 11 kills and made eight assisted blocks. Brittnee Cooper also had eight blocks and 10 kills. Setter Daniela Romero racked up 55 assists, nine digs, three blocks and four kills.
As a team, LSU had a .287 hitting percentage (73-22-178) for the match and connected at a .357 clip (56-11-126) after losing the first game. South Carolina had a .180 (53-26-150) figure overall. The Gamecocks managed to out-dig LSU 72-59, but the Tigers held a 16-11 advantage in blocks.
South Carolina returns to action Friday in Starkville, Miss., when it takes on Mississippi State at 8 p.m. ET.
