South Carolina Head Coach Dave Odom
“I thought it was a really good win for us. We weren’t overly confident going in, and we weren’t playing great going in. I remember last year after we lost to Clemson at Clemson, we went through a period of time where our level of confidence dipped a little bit. I noticed that in Sunday and Monday’s practice. With that in mind, I thought this was a really good win for us, and I’m really proud of our basketball team.”
“For about 32 minutes we played really well. We defended well; we rebounded well; we blocked shots and we made some shots. Some different people contributed. From that standpoint, I was very pleased.”
“The last 8 minutes, when Tre’ (Kelley) got his fourth foul, we showed how young and inexperienced we really are.”
“It was good to see Dwayne Day give us a good performance. Ousmane (Konate) gave us a lift.”
“Brandon Wallace had a career high of 22. He had 8 blocked shots, 7 at halftime. He had 9 rebounds; he had a real scholarly like approach to the game tonight. He was involved in everything that was going on, backcourt, front court, open court, on the backboards. It was clearly one of his best games.”
South Carolina player quotes
Brandon Wallace
“We just wanted to come out and play good. We expected a good crowd. We kind of felt like we let the fans down Saturday and just wanted to come back and get this one back before we go on the road to Waco, Texas, to try to get a game from a Big 12 school. Now we’ll just take a break, get our things together and get back in the gym on Thursday and try to get better.”
“I just felt comfortable handling the ball, shooting and just making plays and blocking shots. I’ve been working on defense and that’s what we want to try to do out there. I just happened to be in the right spot a lot of times and just went after the ball.”
“I just want to have a good game period, whether I’m scoring points or not. I just want to come out and rebound and play well.”
Dwayne Day
“I didn’t know I was going to score points like that today. I just wanted to go out and have a good game. A couple shots started falling for me and I got my confidence up and did well.”
“Dontaye Draper is a good guy. The coaches put me on the best player on the other team. I’ve been working on my defense and feel like I can do more things than one out there. I had fun, it was a challenge.”
“Everything was clicking. The team was clicking. Everybody was crashing the boards because we knew that we didn’t do well against Clemson. Everybody was just motivated and we knew not to get down on ourselves because of that game.”
College of Charleston Head Coach Bobby Cremins
On playing a tough schedule
“As I said the last couple days in the newspapers, I made the mistake of overscheduling this team and playing all these games. That was my stupidity when I got the job. Everybody informed that I had a good team. So, I just regret that we played so many tough games, particularly four games in six or seven days. After losing at Kentucky then coming back Wednesday morning and playing Thursday night and losing in overtime and then losing to Appalachian on Saturday. We’re in a hole, but we played better because we had Sunday off.”
On getting used to his new players
“This has been quite an experience for me. Dontaye (Draper) never played the point before. They had Drew Hall playing it the last two years. So, I’m moving Dontaye to the point this year and it’s been an experience. We had one kid suspended and he may or may not come back. It’s been a wild ride.”
On the Cougars’ performance
“We shot the ball better in the second half. Dontaye (Draper) got hot. I thought we did some good things. Both teams were coming off some bad losses. Wallace intimidated us with his shot blocking ability. I know they (USC) are missing some pieces but you can tell they are an experienced teamed. They move the ball well.”
