The South Carolina men’s tennis team opened its 2007 spring season with a 7-0 victory over Wofford College Sunday at the USC Indoor Fieldhouse in Columbia.

The Gamecocks took a 1-0 lead after winning all three doubles matches. Junior Jaime Cuellar and freshman Ivan Cressoni cruised to an 8-2 win over the Terriers’ Alex Frizdon and George Kernodle at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, Carolina redshirt sophomore Thomas Stoddard combined with freshman David Wolff to claim an 8-4 victory over Scott Collins and Jeff Muthig and seal the doubles point for the Gamecocks. Junior Yevgeny Supeko and freshman Pedro Campos made it a clean sweep in doubles with an 8-5 triumph over Andrew Stubbs and Richard Cahi.

In singles play, the Gamecocks made quick work of the Terriers at No. 1 and No. 4 singles. At the top spot, Supeko defeated Stubbs, 6-3, 6-4, while Cressoni earned his first career win over Frizdon, 6-4, 6-4.

With South Carolina leading 3-0, Campos clinched the match at No. 2 singles. The rookie dropped the first set, 7-5, but rallied to beat Kernodle, 6-4, 6-2, in the final two sets. Freshman David Wolff earned the Gamecocks’ fifth point with a hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 (5) win over Collins at No. 3 singles.

Stoddard added to South Carolina’s lead with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Christopher Williams at the No. 6 position, before freshman Spencer Feldman polished off the Gamecock sweep with a 7-5, 6-2 defeat of Cahi in the fifth spot.
