COLUMBIA, S.C. —The South Carolina’s men’s tennis team ended its opening day of the 2007 season by beating Troy University, 5-1, and extending its record to 2-0.

The Gamecocks were able to get on the board first by claiming two doubles matches and the doubles point. Junior Jaime Cuellar and freshman Ivan Cressoni struck quickly, defeating Colin Van der Hil and Dai Edwards-Evans at second doubles, 8-2. At No. 1 doubles, junior Yevgeny Supeko and freshman Pedro Campos defeated Irving Morales and Bona Hung, 8-4. Although the doubles point already belonged to the Gamecocks, Troy’s Medan Dusan and Bastian Maucher claimed the victory at third doubles, defeating Carolina’s freshman David Wolff and and red-shirt sophomore Thomas Stoddard, 8-4.

With a 1-0 lead, Carolina’s Cuellar made quick work of Troy’s Guilherme Sahadi at fourth singles. The junior only dropped one game in his match to win 6-1, 6-0.

At second singles Supeko played a tough match against Troy’s Hung. After winning the first set 6-4, the Carolina junior found himself needing a tie breaker to win the second, 7-6 (3).

With a three point lead the Gamecocks only needed to win one out of the last four unfinished singles matches to clinch the match. Troy’s 73rd-ranked Morales defeated Campos in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, and took the first point from the Gamecocks in the series’ history.

The winning point came at the fifth singles spot when Wolff easily defeated Maucher, in straight sets. After a quick 6-1 victory in the first set, Wolff closed out the match with a just as impressive 6-2 victory to seal the win for Carolina.

At third singles Cressoni lost the first set to Troy’s Dusan but battled back to win the day’s most intense match, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.

With the match in hand, sixth singles play was suspended in the second set between Spencer Feldman and Edwards-Evans. Feldman won the first set 6-2.

The Gamecocks will host another double header next Sunday, Feb 4, at the USC Indoor Fieldhouse. Carolina will play Appalachian State at 10 a.m. followed by Charleston Southern at 2 p.m.
