1. The interest survey showed a very high interest in the sport being added at the varsity level, therefore meeting the needs and interest of the under represented group, in this case women.
2. One of the fastest growing sports in the country.
3. Very popular in the southeastern states North Carolina and Virginia, and the northeast, therefore a close recruiting area.
4. The average squad size is 27 with a maximum number of scholarships 12, therefore eventually offering an additional 12 scholarship opportunities to female student-athletes, which will be gradated into effect over a five (5) year period.
5. The operating and equipment expenses are acceptable without being excessive.
6. We can use initially utilize existing facilities, for practice and competition which would allow time to develop and implement a permanent facility plan.
8. The competitive season is in the spring, rather than the fall.
9. One other SEC institution already sponsors the sport (Vanderbilt), and Florida has announced that they will compete in their initial season in 2009-10. Other SEC institutions are also considering the sport. If four (4) SEC members sponsor the sport the SEC will conduct a conference championship. There is also the possibility of joining another conference for lacrosse only in the interim.
10. Lacrosse student-athletes are generally considered to be good students and will contribute to the overall academic excellence of the department.
11. USC already has an established club that may serve as a nucleus.
