Athens, Ga. – South Carolina women’s golfer Jenna Pearson posted her second top five finish of the season as the Gamecocks finished ninth with a 302-300-307=909 at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, held at the par-71 University of Georgia Golf Course. The Gamecocks finished 28 strokes behind tournament-winner Auburn and placed ahead of three teams ranked in the top 25 nationally.
Pearson, who tied for fifth with a 216 in the season opener at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, finished in fifth with a 74-71-73=218 (+5). Her final-round 73 was the best performance by any Carolina player Sunday, but she finished three strokes behind individual medalist Leah Wigger from Virginia. Starting on the fourth hole, Pearson sat at one-over for most of the day before posting a birdie on the 17th hole put her at even par. Heading into the final stretch, a double-bogey on the second hole put her at two-over for the day, as her final score placed her ahead of 15 of the top 50 players in the nation who were also in the Liz Murphey Collegiate field.
Freshman Bénédicte Toumpsin continues to impress with her second top 20 finish in her first collegiate season. The Sombreffe, Belgium, native finished in a tie for 19th with a 77-71-77=225 (+12). After beginning the day rough with a double-bogey and bogey on the opening holes, Toumpsin posted 13 pars on the final 16 holes. Junior Camila Mori finished in a tie for 54th with a 76-79-79=234 (+21) while freshman Taylor Barrett finished right behind her tied for 56th with a 78-79-78=235 (+22). Junior Whitney Simons got off to a rough start in the final round and finished with a 75-79-82=236 (+23).
Blythe Worley, competing as an individual, fired a final round 76 as she finished tied for 42nd with a 78-76-76=230 (+17).
