Three basketball players – Bryce Sheldon, Chad Gray and Mitchell Carter – are part of the SCORE International Basketball team that is traveling to Argentina this week. They are part of a long line of Gamecocks who have played with SCORE International including All-SEC first team guard Tre’ Kelley, 2006 NBA first round pick Renaldo Balkman and career shot block leader Brandon Wallace.
Nine players arrived in Atlanta this past weekend from all over the southeast in preparation for their trip to Argentina. Besides the three Gamecocks, players joined the team from Clemson, Ole Miss and Mississippi State with two goals: play some great basketball and spread the word of the Lord.
On May 6 the team enjoyed the morning service at the First Baptist church in Woodstock, GA. The team was recognized and many of the congregation came up to the players to wish them safe travels. A hearty lunch was provided and the team was off to the airport.
The team arrives in Argentina!
After spending two days practicing in Atlanta the SCORE International team flew to Buenos Aires, Argentina the evening of May 6. The ten-hour flight was long, but many of the players passed the time watching the romantic comedy Music and Lyrics while others slept.
Arriving at 7:30am the beleaguered team boarded the bus and traveled two hours south to San Miguel del Monte. Here the team is staying at the Word of Life School preparing for games this week. Despite cooler than expected temperatures (high of 54 degrees Tues., May 8) the team practiced and tried to get a nap afternoon.
For dinner, the entire school gathered for a celebratory dinner with the team as the guests of honor. Many of the players enjoyed local delicacies such as Empanadas for an appetizer and a delicious desert called Flan.
The team will again have a short practice today before playing the Boca Juniors club team at 8:30pm. BJC is considered to be one of the top teams in the country.
