Lift Up America and the University of South Carolina are teaming up with Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE:TSN) to help bring the gift of food to the area’s less fortunate on Friday, Sept. 28. Student-athletes will be on hand to help unload the food and participate in the event. Harvest Hope Food Bank will also help distribute the food to a variety of agencies throughout the area. A press conference will be held at 9:45 a.m. on the northeast corner of the parking lot at Williams-Brice Stadium.
“We’re honored to join forces with great partners to bring more awareness to the problem of childhood hunger in America,” says John Tyson, chairman of Tyson Foods. “We hope what we’re doing here inspires others to share their strengths and resources toward finding solutions for the challenges in America and around the world.”
Founded in 2005 with a mission to give back to communities across the country, Lift Up America continues to nurture its vision of providing important necessities to families and instilling hope in the hearts of America’s less-fortunate. Lift Up America, fueled by caring corporations and individuals and powered by a humanitarian heart, aims to feed the nation’s hungry, while providing hope, hearing and vision screenings, and prescription hearing aids and eyewear to American children in need. Last year, thanks to the generosity of sponsors 15,000 children and families were touched by Lift Up America events with more than $40 million in gifts being distributed throughout the United States and Mexico.
“We are thrilled about the partnership and team spirit between these great organizations,” said Dave Hannah, CEO of Lift Up America. “It is truly inspirational to see so many entities coming together with such a noble goal in mind.”
Protein is one of the most efficient and long lasting sources of energy, and unfortunately, is also the commodity that is donated to food banks the least. The chicken donated today is one of the most concentrated sources of protein–an essential nutrient of life. The average person – man, woman or child – needs to eat about four ounces of protein per day.
Tyson has made significant impact in their fight against hunger nationwide through a partnership with Share Our Strength®, and America’s Second Harvest-The Nation’s Food Bank Network. America’s Second Harvest is the largest charitable domestic hunger-relief organization in the country with more than 200 food banks in its network.
In the seven years from 2000-2007, Tyson donated more than 47 million pounds of protein to hundreds of food banks and feeding agencies across the U.S. Strategically, Tyson seeks to engage all of its stakeholders in the fight against hunger, including customers, consumers, communities, and most importantly, Tyson team members.
