IRVING, Tex. – South Carolina freshman goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer has been named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday. Maurer collected six saves and earned his fourth shutout of the season in the Gamecocks 1-0 victory in their 2007 league opener at UAB on Saturday. The win improved USC’s record to 6-3-0, including a 1-0-0 mark in conference play.

Maurer anchored a strong Gamecock defense against the Blazers on Saturday, collecting six saves in his eighth complete game of the year. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native has four shutouts this season, owns a 0.89 goals against average and has tallied 43 saves. Maurer is the first Gamecock to receive Player of the Week honors since classmate Blake Brettschneider was named the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week earlier this season (Sept. 4).

South Carolina travels to non-conference foe Davidson on Oct. 4 for a 7 p.m. ET contest, before continuing C-USA play at Florida International on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
