Carolina Men’s Tennis Concludes Successful Gamecock Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Play concluded on Sunday at the 2007 Gamecock Invitational, hosted by the Carolina men’s tennis team. The three-day event, played at four different sites, featured 36 teams and over 230 competitors. Full tournament results and final draw sheets are now available. Just two Gamecocks competed on the final day of competition. Johannes Pulsfort concluded a strong tournament in the A-2 singles consolation semifinal with a victory over Davor Zink of Armstrong Atlantic University, 6-3, 6-0. Joe Veeder was defeated in a hard-fought match in the B-1 singles consolation semifinals. He fell 7-5, 6-3 to Eduardo Pinto of Virginia Tech.

Friday – Day One Recap
Sophomore Pedro Campos, seeded No. 2 in the A-1 singles bracket, posted the top Gamecock win of the day, advancing to Saturday’s round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Scott Robertson of Jacksonville State. Also advancing in singles action for the Gamecocks was sophomore David Wolff who will play in Saturday’s round of 16 after defeating Andrew Veeder of Gardner-Webb, 7-5, 6-1. In the B-1 singles flight, sophomore Thomas Stoddard defeated Jan Langer of South Carolina State (6-3, 6-4) and freshman Chris Sheehan earned a victory over Steven Myers of the College of Charleston (6-4, 6-1), rounding out USC’s singles victories. In doubles action, the team of Campos and sophomore Ivan Cressoni, seeded No. 3 in the A-1 doubles flight, defeated Derrick Defazio and Kevin Galloway of Clemson (8-2) in the round of 16, but fell to Andrew Brasseaux and Charles Sator of Wake Forest, 8-5, in the quarterfinal round.

Saturday – Day Two Recap
Chris Sheehan defeated Bastian Czwalinna of FMU in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, while teammate Thomas Stoddard defeated Alejandro Portugal of Winthrop, 7-5, 5-7, 6-1. Both Sheehan and Stoddard suffered losses in their respective quarterfinal matches. Johannes Pulsfort advanced to the A-2 singles consolation round quarterfinals, defeating Carlos Salmon of Wake Forest, 6-1, 6-3.
