COLUMBIA, S.C. – Brooke Jacobs has been named the SEC Freshman of the Week following her performance in South Carolina’s unbeaten weekend, the conference office announced Monday. Jacobs (Chambersburg, Pa.) becomes only the second Gamecock to earn the honor; Alex Mouton was Carolina’s first SEC Freshman of the Week in September 2005.
Jacobs scored the game-winning goal in the 65th minute to propel USC to a 1-0 victory against Arkansas Sunday at Stone Stadium. The shot was her only of the game and beat the goalkeeper into the left side of the net for the score. Since becoming active midseason following a preseason injury, Jacobs has registered one goal and three assists for five points and is currently fifth on the team in points.
The conference honor is the fourth this season for South Carolina. Jacobs’s honor follows those of Lindsay Thorstenson, Blakely Mattern and Laura Armstrong, who have all earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors this season. This week marks the second time that South Carolina had players pick up a conference honor in back-to-back weeks. Thorstenson and Mattern picked up their awards in weeks one and two, respectively, while Armstrong earned her honor last week following two shutout victories.
